Tom Walsh has a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Boston College. Over the past thirty years in the plastics industry he has worked in research & development, product development management, technical service management, application development, sales, marketing, market development, business development, small business unit management and trade association management.

He is experienced with a wide variety of plastics including polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinylchloride, crosslinked polyethylene, nylons, polyphenylene sulfides, fluoropolymers, engineering thermoplastics, engineering thermoplastic alloys, barrier resins, as well as filled and reinforced compounds. He has a strong background in polymer applications including extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, film extrusion, pipe extrusion, profile extrusion, fibers, mono-filament, strapping, sheet, thermoforming, geomembranes, compression molding, injection molding and rotational molding.

In 2009, he was elected Chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) committee F-17, Plastic Piping Systems. In 2007 he received the Award of Merit from ASTM and was honored as a Fellow of ASTM.

While at the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., as Executive Director and Technical Director of the Plastics Pipe Institute, he initiated market development programs for polyethylene piping products in North America. He managed the operations of the Institute and represented the US plastics piping industry with Federal Government agencies, with various industry associations and regulatory agencies and with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). He also was Chairman of the Hydrostatic Stress Board of PPI.

While with Solvay Polymers he was responsible for the introduction to the US of four engineering plastic product lines including high performance nylon compounds, polyphenylene sulfide compounds and two nylon-/polypropylene alloyed compound product lines. In addition, he provided technical marketing support to the Solvay Specialty Resins Group for fluoropolymers and barrier resins.

Previously at Solvay, he was responsible for the development and commercial introduction of a complete product line of polypropylene film resins for biaxial oriented film, cast film, blown film and specialty film applications. He managed the technical services and product development of Solvay's polypropylene fiber products. He also developed polyethylene pipe compounds and masterbatch products for gas pipe, water, sewer, industrial piping, and conduit applications. He developed polyethylene and polypropylene sheet extrusion, thermoforming, geomembranes compounds and managed a broad line of polyethylene injection molding and rotomolding products. He has developed thermoplastic vulcanizates compounds, thermoplastic elastomer compounds and multi-layer blow molding and multi-layer sheet and thermoforming compounds in joint research efforts with Solvay customers.
